If the Moroccan city of Ouarzazate is considered the ‘Gate of the Desert’, then the Fint Oasis, located only 10 km south, could very well be the Sahara Desert Garden.
It is almost impossible to imagine that an exit from Ouarzazate, with a barren and desolate terrain like that of the anti-atlas mountains, it can make us pass without warning in such a green and lush vegetation, full of life.
Fint Oasis
If you love nature and landscapes, this is an absolutely recommended visit, and even more considering how close it is to Ouarzazate.
There is no excuse not to make an escape and visit this beautiful and hidden corner, because in fact the name of Oasis of Fint means “hidden” in Berber.
When we arrive at the Oasis of Fint we can leave the car in a sort of improvised parking or continue on a track that takes us to the village that shares the same name of the oasis, and that is located around it.
Palm trees in Fint Oasis
Personally, we advise you to leave your car in the parking lot and take the tour along the oasis on foot. The full tour can take about 30-45 minutes. Right after getting out of the car, it is very likely that some locals are waiting for you to be your guide.
It is your decision to walk alone or guided, they will also offer you to see the people, their homes and their way of life. This city basically lives on agriculture and tourism.
The premises of the Oasis of Fint are of dark complexion, originally from Mali, formerly nomads who accompanied the caravans of traders of the Sahara desert and also some slaves who fled and found refuge here.
Currently there is a population of about 1,000 inhabitants, distributed in four small villages called Wangarf, Taherbilte, Timoula and Belghizi, who live by the cultivation they do on the banks.
The Fint Oasis has two clearly distinct areas. One of these is an old medina made of adobe in which only about 3 families currently live.
You can visit the ruins of this ancient village that was established on this side of the river to avoid flooding.
The other part is the modern village, where the inhabitants are mainly farmers and live on agriculture.
Oasis of fint landscape
To make the visit we suggest you to visit the whole Fint Oasis, embroidering it, while enjoying the beautiful surrounding landscapes and discovering the curious way that its people have to cultivate the land and carry out daily activities.
His women gather again to do laundry on the shore of the oasis. Then you have to cross the river to visit the ancient medina with its humble brick houses. From the top you can enjoy a beautiful view of the entire complex of the Fint Oasis and the village.

Once you have admired the landscape at the gateway to the Sahara Desert, you can descend and cross the river to the new part, where practically the entire population lives.
It is very curious to walk through its streets and see its way of life, because it seems that time stopped many years ago and everything seems unchanged.
People here, it is very friendly and sure that they are willing to tell you about their stories and traditions, as well as show you how they live everyday life, the interior of their own homes and other interesting places in the village, such as the artisanal bread oven.
With the help of UNICEF, solar panels have been installed to power water pumps that provide drinking water to the population.
