Roses Valley : Kelaa M gouna, which has a population of about 15,000 people, is located less than 55 kilometers from Skoura. It is a fortified village located at 1,500 meters above sea level, famous for its rose water distillery.
Precisely this is the Valley of the Roses, located at the foot of the High Atlas in Morocco, at the confluence with the Dades Valley, another of the most recommended destinations for trips to Morocco that we organize.
The Valley of the Roses, with its intoxicating aromas, is formed by hectares of roses whose aroma is appreciated throughout the month of May. This place has breathtaking and seductive scenery where you can get lost.
The most significant industries in this location are rose cultivation, essence distillation, and perfume production. Flowering lasts from mid-April to mid-May.
Kasbah in Valley of Roses
Kelaa M gouna is inhabited mainly by a Amazigh population. This bustling city is an economic, commercial and social hub for the population of this region, and is well known for its Rose Festival, which takes place every year in May.
The French introduced the damask rose to Kelaa M gouna in 1938. It was then that the first rose water distillery was opened. Soon after the first edition of the Rose Festival began, which has since become a real tradition.
The Rose Festival takes place on the first weekend of May each year. It lasts two days, celebrating the arrival of these flowers in the valleys of Dades and M’goun.
Queen of Fistival Roses
The population of Kalaat M’gouna doubles during this festival, or moussem. It is a place much visited by Moroccans living in other cities of the kingdom, known for its perfumes and cosmetics made of rose water, as well as for the hospitality and warmth of its people.
The festival is also an opportunity for visitors to Kelaa M gouna to discover its small handicrafts and agricultural products of the region. Since it takes roughly a ton of extract to produce one liter of extract, more than 4,001 tons are produced during the festival.
Just like other festivals you can discover during our trips to Morocco, the Rose Festival prepares a delicious meal with the local Berber tribes by singing, dancing, showing their swords and playing traditional musical instruments. In addition, there is a parade of floats with the candidates for Miss Valley of the Roses.
