Destination Atlantic Coast of Morocco

Northern Morocco

The concept of ‘North of Morocco’ covers a very wide and very diverse geographical area, since it includes the entire Mediterranean coast but also an important part of the Atlantic coast: the one that is located farther north. In addition, a large portion of the interior also forms part of this area, where the RIF mountains and their associated natural landscapes stand out.

The most important cities and towns in northern Morocco are:

Tetouan
Tangier
Asilah
Chaouen or Chefchaouen
Saidia
Nador

One of the advantages of northern Morocco is its proximity to Spain and, therefore, is one of the best known areas for travelers from this neighboring country. In fact, our company can organize circuits through this area from every where in Morocco. In any case, the great gateway to this geographical area is Tangier. Fez can also serve as an airport of arrival and departure for those who wish to organize a tour of these tourist destinations in Morocco.

Imperial Cities

With this name we know four monumental cities that have several aspects in common:

Rabat
Marrakech
Meknes
Fez

The first of these aspects in common is the fact that it was the capital of the kingdom (or of previous and more or less equivalent political entities) at some point in its history, which gives them that ‘imperial’ category. Another characteristic that makes them great tourist destinations in Morocco is its declaration as a World Heritage by Unesco, giving account of its enormous historical-artistic wealth. And finally, another reason for grouping them under the same umbrella is their relative proximity and good communications:

although each of them is in a different geographical area, it is possible to move through all of them through national highways or main roads, allowing you to set up a package called ‘Imperial Cities Tour’… which also includes many other attractions on the way from one to another.

Archaeological remains

For many travelers, the archaeological remains of the country are one of the most pleasant surprises of their trip. Among other reasons, for the historical period in which they fit: the Roman Empire, which in North Africa established the province Mauritania Tingitana. In this sense, there are two major tourist destinations in Morocco that use as a claim their archaeological wealth:

Volubilis
Lixus

Lovers of history, archaeology and culture in general will greatly enjoy traveling through these tourist destinations in Morocco. However, it is also possible to integrate both visits as part of an excursion from other cities in the country, such as Fez or Rabat.

Sahara

The Sahara Desert is undoubtedly one of the main tourist destinations in Morocco. In fact, it is a vast expanse of land located in the south of the country, which also includes other deserts popularly known by its reference population. In addition, the landscape is not homogeneous: most of the territory has a hamada aspect, that is, an arid and stony landscape, but there is also space for fertile valleys in the form of oases and for large areas of dunes, known as ergs.

Therefore, the Sahara integrates here interesting tourist destinations of Morocco, whether cities, towns, ergs or natural accidents. The most important are:

Todra Gorges
Draa Valley
Dades Valley
Oasis of Fint
Dades Gorges
Ouarzazate
Ait Ben Haddou
Zagora
Merzouga
Rose Valley – Kelaa M’Gouna
Ouzina
Rissani
Erfoud

Those interested in touring the Moroccan Sahara should choose Marrakech as their starting and ending point, since the airports located in the south of the country do not have relevant international air traffic. Another feasible option as a starting and ending place is to choose the city of Fez. If done from Marrakech, the route will cross the High Atlas, and if done from Fez, it will cross the Middle Atlas, natural environments that also make up a tourist destination in Morocco, for different reasons.

Atlas

The Atlas is the great mountain range that runs the country from northeast to southwest. And it is, in itself, another of the tourist destinations of Morocco, especially attractive for nature lovers and high mountain landscapes. In fact, the Moroccan Atlas can be subdivided into three mountain ranges: the High Atlas, the Middle Atlas and the Anti-Atlas, with the first two attracting the most attention from travelers. The main ‘high altitude’ tourist destinations are:

Ifrane
Azrou

The two destinations mentioned are easily accessible from Fez. In addition, there are other places near Marrakech that can be visited in excursion format, such as the Ourika Valley and the Imlil Valley, full of picturesque villages and panoramic views of enormous interest.

Atlantic Coast

The Atlantic Coast has an area of about 3,000 kilometers in this country. Therefore, here you will find many attractions, including some of the best tourist destinations in Morocco. Many of them are considered ‘sun and beach’, while others are very oriented to water activities such as surfing. And there are some cities focused on culture and monuments.

The tourist destinations of the ‘Atlantic’ Morocco are the following, not counting those we have already cited in the category of ‘North of Morocco’:

Agadir
Casablanca
El Jadida
Essaouira
Oualidia
Safi
Taghazout

To explore this part of the country, it is advisable to fly to Casablanca, the largest city in the country, and travel the Atlantic coast to the south. Another option is Agadir, Morocco’s main tourist destination for sun and beach tourism. However, it is also a good idea to fly to Marrakech and travel by road to Essaouira, located less than 200 km by motorway.
