Itinerary

Welcome to the spiritual heart of Morocco! Your journey begins in Fes, a city that has preserved its medieval soul for over a thousand years. Upon your arrival at Fes-Saïss Airport, our professional team will provide a private transfer to your traditional Riad in the heart of the medina. Fes is home to the world’s oldest continuously operating university and a medina that is a UNESCO World Heritage site, serving as the largest car-free urban area on the planet. This first day is designed to immerse you in the intoxicating atmosphere of Fes El-Bali.

We begin our guided exploration at the Royal Palace Gate with its seven golden doors, followed by a panoramic view of the medina from the Southern Tower. As we enter the medina through the famous blue gate, Bab Boujloud, your senses will be overwhelmed by the scent of spices, the sound of copper beaters, and the vibrant colors of silk. We visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 AD, and the Bou Inania Madrasa, an architectural masterpiece of carved cedar and stucco. The highlight for many is the visit to the Chouara Tannery, the oldest in the world, where you can watch workers treating hides in stone vats filled with natural dyes using techniques that have remained unchanged for centuries. Fes is the ultimate destination for traditional crafts, and you will see artisans working with leather, copper, and ceramics. After a day of intense exploration, you will enjoy a traditional Fassi dinner, reflecting on the incredible layers of history you have witnessed.

On the second day, we travel through time as we explore the deep historical layers surrounding Fes. Our first stop is Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. As you walk along the ancient streets, you will see remarkably intact mosaics that have survived for nearly two thousand years, depicting mythological scenes with incredible detail. The triumphal arches and the Basilica standing against the open Moroccan sky offer a powerful sense of the scale of the Roman Empire’s reach. This site is a must-see for anyone interested in Mediterranean history and archaeology.

Nearby, we catch a glimpse of the holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, perched dramatically on two hills. It is considered the most sacred town in Morocco, holding the tomb of the man who brought Islam to the region. After lunch, we visit the imperial city of Meknes, the “Versailles of Morocco,” built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century. We will stand before the monumental Bab Mansour, widely considered the most beautiful gate in North Africa, and visit the Royal Granaries. Finally, we turn north into the rugged Rif Mountains toward the “Blue Pearl,” Chefchaouen. As you arrive in the late afternoon, the sight of the city’s blue-washed buildings nestled against the mountainside is truly magical. We’ll settle into a Riad, ready to experience the most peaceful town in the kingdom.

Today is yours to enjoy the serene atmosphere of Chefchaouen in the morning. Every corner of the medina is a photographer’s dream, with every shade of blue imaginable covering the walls, doors, and stairs. We’ll wander through the Place Outa el-Hammam and see the Ras El Ma spring, where local life revolves around the cold mountain water. The blue color, ranging from pale sky blue to deep indigo, gives the entire town an oniric energy. You can shop for unique local wool handicrafts or enjoy a final mountain tea on a rooftop terrace before we begin our journey south.

In the afternoon, we head into the natural beauty of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Our first stop is Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” for its alpine architecture and tidy parks. Built by the French in the 1930s as a high-altitude resort, it offers a surprising contrast to the architecture of the imperial cities. Just a short drive away, we enter the vast Cedar Forest of Azrou, the largest of its kind in North Africa. This is the natural habitat of the Barbary Macaques, and we will stop to see these friendly monkeys in their natural environment among the ancient trees. As the sun begins to set, we descend the mountains back toward Fes, where you will spend your final night in your Riad, enjoying the familiar comfort of the old city.

On the final day of your 4-day tour, you have a relaxing morning to enjoy the last sights of Fes at your own pace. You can revisit the souks for some last-minute gift shopping—perhaps a handmade leather bag or a piece of Fassi pottery—or simply enjoy a final breakfast on your Riad’s rooftop terrace, listening to the morning call to prayer echoing across the thousand-year-old rooftops. This is a time for reflection on the incredible journey you have completed, from the tanneries of Fes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis to the blue streets of the Rif Mountains and the cedar forests of the Atlas.

Our team will provide a private transfer from your Riad to Fes-Saïss Airport for your departure. As you prepare to board your flight, you will carry with you the scent of the spices, the vibrant colors of the blue city, and the warmth of the Moroccan hospitality you have experienced every day. Whether it was the intricate mosaics of Volubilis or the peaceful energy of Chefchaouen that moved you most, this 4-day journey has provided a deep and authentic understanding of Morocco’s northern heritage. Safe travels, or as we say in Morocco, Trik Salama! We hope to welcome you back to our beautiful land very soon to explore the desert or the south with Morocco Travel Land.
