Itinerary

Welcome to Tangier, the legendary “Bride of the North” and the gateway between Africa and Europe. Upon your arrival at the airport or the ferry port, our professional team will be waiting to provide a private transfer to your hotel. Tangier has long been a crossroads for civilizations—Phoenicians, Romans, and later European powers during its time as an “International Zone.” This unique history has left behind a cosmopolitan atmosphere that you will feel immediately.

We begin our exploration at the Kasbah of Tangier, perched on a cliff overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. Inside the museum of the Kasbah, you will learn about the region’s rich archeological past. We then descend into the vibrant Medina, walking through the Grand Socco and Petit Socco squares. You will wander through narrow alleys filled with the scent of spices and fresh bread. After a traditional lunch, we drive along the coast to visit Cape Spartel, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. Nearby, we explore the mythical Hercules Caves, where legend says the hero rested. The evening is yours to enjoy a walk along the seaside corniche, watching the lights of Spain flicker across the water as you settle into the Moroccan rhythm.

After breakfast, we head south along the Atlantic coast to the artistic town of Asilah. Known for its annual arts festival, Asilah’s medina is a living gallery with stunning murals painted on its white-washed walls. We will walk along the 15th-century Portuguese ramparts and enjoy the peaceful, coastal atmosphere of this hidden gem. Asilah’s clean streets and blue-and-white houses offer a gentle and quiet introduction to the aesthetic beauty of Northern Morocco.

In the afternoon, we turn inland and ascend into the rugged Rif Mountains toward the “Blue Pearl,” Chefchaouen. As you approach, the sight of the city’s blue-washed buildings clinging to the mountainside is truly magical. Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a fortress and later became a refuge for Muslims and Jews fleeing Andalusia. We will check into a traditional Riad in the heart of the medina. You can spend your first evening wandering through the glowing blue alleys, visiting the Place Outa el-Hammam, and perhaps hiking up to the Spanish Mosque for a breathtaking sunset view over the entire blue valley. The mountain air is crisp and the atmosphere is incredibly relaxing, making it one of the most photographed stops in the kingdom.

Today is yours to enjoy a relaxing morning in Chefchaouen. You can revisit your favorite blue alleys, shop for unique local wool handicrafts, or enjoy a mint tea in one of the many rooftop cafes. The blue color, ranging from pale sky blue to deep indigo, was traditionally used to symbolize the sky and heaven, and it gives the town a unique, oniric energy. We will visit the Ras El Ma spring, where the cold mountain water provides a natural cooling system for the town and serves as a social gathering spot for locals.

After a traditional lunch in the mountains, we begin our drive south toward Fes, the spiritual and intellectual heart of Morocco. The journey takes us through the lush landscapes of the Rif Mountains and the fertile plains of Saiss. As the sun begins to set, we arrive in Fes, which is home to the world’s oldest continuously operating university and a medina that has remained largely unchanged for over 1,000 years. You will check into your Riad, a traditional mansion hidden behind an unassuming door in the old city. You will enjoy a traditional Fassi dinner, known for its sophisticated blend of sweet and savory flavors, marking the start of your stay in this medieval wonder.

Prepare to step back in time as we explore Fes El-Bali, the largest car-free urban area in the world. With over 9,000 narrow alleys and hundreds of neighborhoods, a local guide is essential to navigate this living museum. Our journey starts at the Royal Palace Gate with its seven golden doors, followed by a panoramic view of the medina from the Southern Tower, offering a breathtaking perspective of the sprawling cityscape and its countless minarets.

We enter the medina through the famous blue gate, Bab Boujloud. Inside, your senses will be overwhelmed by the scent of spices, the sound of copper beaters, and the vibrant colors of silk. We visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 AD, and the Bou Inania Madrasa, an architectural masterpiece featuring stunning stucco and cedar wood carvings. The highlight for many is the visit to the Chouara Tannery, the oldest in the world. From a nearby terrace, you can watch workers treating hides in stone vats filled with natural dyes using techniques that have remained unchanged for centuries. Fes is the best place in Morocco to buy high-quality leather goods, carpets, and ceramics directly from the artisans. After a day of intense exploration, you will return to your Riad for a quiet evening.

Today, we explore the imperial history surrounding Fes. Our first stop is a journey back two thousand years at Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. As you walk along the Decumanus Maximus, you will see remarkably intact mosaics depicting scenes from Greek mythology, grand triumphal arches, and the remains of the Basilica. It is a powerful reminder of Morocco’s deep historical layers and its Mediterranean heritage.

Nearby, we visit the holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, perched dramatically on two hills. It is considered the most sacred town in Morocco, as it holds the tomb of Idris I, the founder of the first Moroccan dynasty. After lunch, we continue to Meknes, the “Versailles of Morocco.” Founded by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, Meknes was designed to be the grandest capital in the world. We will stand before the monumental Bab Mansour, widely considered the most beautiful gate in North Africa, and visit the Royal Granaries and Stables. We also explore the peaceful Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail before returning to Fes for the evening. This day provides a fascinating contrast between Roman antiquity and the 17th-century Moroccan empire.

After the bustle of the imperial cities, today we head into the natural beauty of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Our first stop is Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland.” Built by the French in the 1930s as a ski resort, its alpine-style architecture and tidy parks are a surprising contrast to the rest of the country. Nearby, we enter the vast Cedar Forest of Azrou, the largest in North Africa. Here, we will encounter the friendly Barbary Macaques (monkeys) that live among the ancient trees. It is a peaceful, green environment that offers a refreshing change of pace.

We will continue our drive through the mountain landscapes, passing through small Berber villages and seeing nomadic families with their livestock. We will stop at local viewpoints to admire the limestone plateaus and the hidden valleys of the Atlas. This region is famous for its unique flora and fauna, and the air is crisp and clean. In the afternoon, we return to Fes, where you will have some free time for last-minute shopping in the souks or perhaps a visit to a traditional Hammam for a spa treatment. Your final evening in Fes is a chance to enjoy a farewell dinner in a palace restaurant, celebrating the incredible journey you have shared across the north of Morocco.

Your 7-day North Morocco adventure comes to an end today. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time for one last walk through the medina or a final coffee at a café overlooking the rooftops of Fes El-Bali. This is a time for reflection on the diverse landscapes you have crossed—from the Mediterranean coast of Tangier and the artistic walls of Asilah to the blue streets of Chefchaouen and the medieval history of Fes and Meknes.

Our team will provide a private transfer from your Riad to Fes-Saïss Airport or back to Tangier for your departure. As you prepare to board your flight, you will carry with you the scent of the spices, the vibrant colors of the blue city, and the warmth of the Moroccan hospitality you have experienced every day. Whether it was the Roman mosaics of Volubilis or the rhythmic sounds of the tanneries in Fes that moved you most, this 7-day journey has provided a deep and authentic understanding of the kingdom’s heritage. Safe travels, or as we say in Morocco, Trik Salama! We hope to see you again soon for another adventure with Morocco Travel Land.
