Itinerary

Your 3-day Sahara adventure begins with an early departure from the vibrant “Red City” of Marrakech. As we leave the bustling medina behind, we immediately begin our ascent into the legendary High Atlas Mountains. Our journey takes us over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest road pass in North Africa at an altitude of 2,260 meters. Along the winding roads, you will witness dramatic landscapes and traditional Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides, where life has remained unchanged for centuries. The panoramic views of the snow-capped peaks (in winter) and the deep green valleys far below provide an incredible introduction to the diversity of Morocco’s geography.

Our first major stop is the iconic Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a crown jewel of earthen architecture. This fortified village is made of clay and straw and has served as the filming location for numerous Hollywood blockbusters, including Gladiator, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones. As you walk through its narrow, winding passages to the granary at the top of the hill, you will feel the history of the ancient caravan routes that once connected the Sahara to the Atlantic. After a traditional lunch overlooking the Ounila Valley, we continue our journey toward Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Africa,” passing the impressive Taourirt Kasbah.

The final leg of our first day takes us through the Rose Valley (Kelaat M’Gouna), famous for its annual rose festival and the production of fragrant rose water and oils. As the sun begins to set, the landscape shifts into the red-tinted earth of the Dades Valley. We pass through the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs,” where ancient fortified homes rise like sculptures from the greenery. We conclude the day in a charming hotel or guesthouse overlooking the Dades River. Here, you will enjoy a peaceful dinner in the cool mountain air, resting before our deep dive into the desert tomorrow.

After a hearty breakfast with a view of the lush Dades palm groves, we head toward the spectacular Todra Gorges. This is a massive fault in the plateau that separates the High Atlas from the Anti-Atlas. The Todra River has carved a deep, narrow canyon over millions of years, leaving vertical limestone walls that rise up to 300 meters high. We will take a leisurely walk along the riverbank, dwarfed by the sheer scale of the orange cliffs. It is a favorite spot for rock climbers and nature lovers, offering a refreshing mountain breeze that contrasts with the warmth of the plains.

As we continue our drive south, the landscape becomes increasingly arid, signaled by the appearance of thousands of date palms in the Tafilalet region. We will pass through Erfoud, famous for its prehistoric fossils, where you can see how 500-million-year-old sea creatures are extracted from the rock and polished into beautiful marble slabs. By late afternoon, we reach the edge of the desert at Merzouga. This is where the real magic happens: you will meet your camel caravan for a sunset trek into the towering golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.

Riding into the desert as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of gold and purple, is a spiritual experience. The silence of the dunes is unlike anything you have heard before. We arrive at our luxury desert camp, nestled in the heart of the Sahara. You will be welcomed with a cup of traditional mint tea and a delicious Berber feast. As the night deepens, we gather around a campfire for a night of traditional drumming and storytelling by local nomads under a sky filled with millions of stars. You will spend the night in a private, comfortable tent, lulled to sleep by the absolute peace of the desert.

Waking up early in the Sahara is essential to witness one of the most beautiful sights in the world: the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. Watching the first light touch the crests of the sand is a moment you will never forget. After a traditional breakfast at the camp, we return to the village of Merzouga on camels or by 4×4. From here, we begin our long but scenic return journey toward Marrakech. We take a different route back, passing through the vast volcanic landscapes of the Anti-Atlas Mountains and the town of N’kob.

Our route follows the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley, which is home to over a million date palms and dozens of historic Kasbahs. This region was once a vital part of the trade route between Timbuktu and Marrakech. We will stop for lunch in a traditional setting before crossing back over the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass once more. This return journey offers a different perspective of the mountains, with the late afternoon light casting long shadows across the rugged peaks and deep canyons.

As we descend the western slopes of the Atlas, the landscape turns green again as we approach the plains of Marrakech. We arrive back in the “Red City” in the late afternoon or early evening, where your driver will drop you off at your Riad or the airport. Although the 3-day tour is intense, it covers some of the most iconic and diverse scenery in North Africa. You return with a heart full of memories, a camera full of photos, and a deep appreciation for the ancient culture and hospitality of the Moroccan people.
