Itinerary

Your journey begins at the legendary gateway between Africa and Europe: Tangier. Upon your arrival at the airport or the ferry port, our professional team will meet you and provide a private transfer to your hotel. Tangier is a city with a unique, cosmopolitan history, having served as an “International Zone” for much of the 20th century. Its artistic and literary past has attracted figures like Henri Matisse and Paul Bowles, and you will feel this bohemian energy as we begin our exploration.

We start at the Kasbah of Tangier, perched on the highest point of the city, offering panoramic views across the Strait of Gibraltar to the coast of Spain. Inside the Kasbah museum (formerly the Sultan’s Palace), you will learn about the region’s diverse history. From there, we descend into the vibrant Medina, walking through the Grand Socco and Petit Socco squares. You will visit the famous Mendoubia Gardens and explore the local markets filled with spices, textiles, and traditional crafts. After a traditional North Moroccan lunch, we visit Cape Spartel, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, and the mythical Hercules Caves. The evening is yours to enjoy a walk along the newly renovated corniche, soaking in the sea breeze of this historic port city.

After breakfast, we head south along the Atlantic coast to the charming artistic town of Asilah. Known for its annual arts festival, Asilah’s medina is a gallery in itself, with stunning murals painted on its white-washed walls. We will walk along the 15th-century Portuguese ramparts and enjoy the peaceful, coastal atmosphere of this hidden gem. Asilah’s clean streets and blue-and-white houses offer a gentle introduction to the aesthetics of northern Morocco.

In the afternoon, we turn inland and ascend into the rugged Rif Mountains toward the “Blue Pearl,” Chefchaouen. As you approach, the sight of the city’s blue buildings clinging to the mountainside is truly magical. Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a fortress against Portuguese invasions and later became a refuge for Muslims and Jews fleeing Spain. We will check into a traditional Riad in the heart of the medina. You can spend your first evening wandering through the glowing blue alleys, visiting the Place Outa el-Hammam, and perhaps hiking up to the Spanish Mosque for a breathtaking sunset view over the entire blue valley. The mountain air is crisp and the atmosphere is incredibly relaxing, making it one of the most beloved stops in the kingdom.

We leave the blue dream behind and head toward the fertile plains of Saiss to explore Morocco’s imperial past. Our first stop is a journey back 2,000 years at Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site containing the best-preserved Roman ruins in North Africa. You will walk along the ancient streets and see remarkably intact mosaics depicting scenes from Greek mythology, grand triumphal arches, and the remains of the Basilica. It is a powerful reminder of Morocco’s deep historical layers.

Next, we visit the imperial city of Meknes, the “Versailles of Morocco,” built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century. We will stand before the monumental Bab Mansour, widely considered the most beautiful gate in Morocco, and visit the Royal Granaries and Stables. We also make a brief stop at the holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, perched dramatically on a hill. Finally, we continue our drive to Fes, the spiritual and intellectual heart of Morocco. Fes is home to the world’s oldest university and a medina that has remained largely unchanged for over a millennium. You will enjoy a traditional Fassi dinner in your Riad, marking the beginning of your stay in this medieval wonder.

Prepare for a sensory explosion as we explore Fes El-Bali, the largest car-free urban area in the world. With over 9,000 narrow alleys, a local guide is essential to navigate this living museum. Our journey starts at the Royal Palace Gate with its seven golden doors, followed by a panoramic view of the medina from the Southern Tower. We enter the medina through the famous blue gate, Bab Boujloud, and immediately feel the shift in time.

We visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 AD, and the Bou Inania Madrasa, an architectural masterpiece of carved cedar and stucco. The highlight for many is the visit to the Chouara Tannery, the oldest in the world, where you can watch workers treating hides in stone vats filled with natural dyes. Fes is the ultimate destination for traditional Moroccan crafts; you will see artisans working with leather, copper, and ceramics using techniques passed down through generations. After a day of intense exploration, the late afternoon offers a chance to relax at your Riad or visit a traditional hammam, reflecting on the incredible history you have witnessed.

On the final day of our tour, we undertake a scenic journey across the heart of Morocco to reach the “Red City.” We head south through the Middle Atlas Mountains, stopping in Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” for its alpine architecture and tidy parks. Just a few kilometers away, we enter the Cedar Forest of Azrou, where we will likely encounter the friendly Barbary Macaques living among the ancient trees.

As we continue toward Marrakech, we drive through the diverse landscapes of the Atlas, passing through the town of Beni Mellal and the stunning Ouzoud Waterfalls region (time permitting). The scenery shifts from green mountain forests to the warm, red earth of the Haouz plains. We arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening. Your driver will drop you off at your Riad or the airport, marking the end of your 5-day imperial journey. From the Mediterranean coast of Tangier to the vibrant energy of Marrakech, you have experienced the best of Morocco’s history, culture, and nature in one unforgettable trip.
