Itinerary
Welcome to the “Red City”! Your journey begins in Marrakech, a city that has captivated travelers for centuries with its vibrant colors, exotic scents, and bustling energy. Upon arrival at Menara Airport, our professional team will greet you and provide a private transfer to your traditional Riad in the heart of the medina. Marrakech is a sensory explosion where ancient history meets modern Moroccan life.
Depending on your arrival time, you can spend your first afternoon easing into the atmosphere. We recommend a visit to the Majorelle Garden, a tranquil oasis of exotic plants and cobalt blue architecture once owned by Yves Saint Laurent. As evening falls, head to the legendary Jemaa el-Fnaa Square. This UNESCO-listed site transforms into a giant open-air theater filled with storytellers, musicians, and snake charmers. Enjoy your first Moroccan dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking the square, watching the city come alive under the stars. This first night is the perfect introduction to the magic that awaits you over the next ten days.
After breakfast, we leave the red walls of Marrakech behind and head west toward the Atlantic coast to visit Essaouira, a charming seaside town formerly known as Mogador. On the way, we pass through the famous Argan Forests, the only place in the world where these trees grow. You might even see the famous “climbing goats” perched on the branches. We will stop at a women’s cooperative to see how they manually extract the precious Argan oil, often called “liquid gold.”
Upon arrival in Essaouira, you’ll be greeted by the cool sea breeze and a much more relaxed pace of life. We explore the Skala de la Ville, the impressive 18th-century seaside bastions where ancient cannons still point toward the ocean. The medina of Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for its blue-and-white houses and narrow alleys filled with art galleries and wood workshops. For lunch, head to the fish market to enjoy fresh grilled seafood caught that morning. Spend your afternoon walking along the expansive sandy beach or exploring the Jewish Mellah. Essaouira’s bohemian vibe and refreshing Atlantic air provide a beautiful contrast to the heat of Marrakech.
We return to Marrakech this morning for an in-depth exploration of its historic wonders. With a local guide, you will dive into the rich history of the Saadian Tombs, a royal necropolis rediscovered in 1917, and the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century masterpiece of carved plaster and zellige tilework. We also visit the Koutoubia Mosque, the largest in Marrakech, whose iconic minaret has served as a landmark for travelers since the 12th century.
The afternoon is dedicated to the Souks of Marrakech. This labyrinth of commerce is divided into specialized areas: leather, copper, spices, and textiles. You will see artisans at work, using techniques passed down through generations. Your guide will help you navigate the winding alleys and perhaps find a unique souvenir to take home. We conclude the tour back at Jemaa el-Fnaa, which is even more vibrant in the late afternoon. This day is designed to give you a deep understanding of the “Red City” before we head toward the mountains and the desert tomorrow.
Our adventure into the heart of Morocco continues as we cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. At an altitude of 2,260 meters, this is the highest road pass in North Africa, offering breathtaking panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and Berber villages tucked into green valleys. The descent toward the pre-Saharan plains brings us to the iconic Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. This fortified village is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a famous filming location for movies like Gladiator and Game of Thrones.
After exploring the ancient towers of Ait Ben Haddou, we drive through Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Africa,” and enter the Rose Valley (Kelaat M’Gouna). This region is famous for its annual rose harvest and the production of fragrant rose water. As the sun begins to set, the landscape shifts into the red-tinted earth of the Dades Valley. We pass through the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs,” where ancient fortified homes rise like sculptures from the greenery. We conclude the day in a charming hotel overlooking the Dades River, resting before our deep dive into the desert tomorrow.
Today, we head toward the spectacular Todra Gorges. This is a massive fault in the plateau that separates the High Atlas from the Anti-Atlas. The Todra River has carved a deep, narrow canyon over millions of years, leaving vertical limestone walls that rise up to 300 meters high. We will take a leisurely walk along the riverbank, dwarfed by the sheer scale of the orange cliffs. It is a favorite spot for rock climbers and nature lovers, offering a refreshing mountain breeze.
As we continue our drive south, the landscape becomes increasingly arid, signaled by the appearance of thousands of date palms in the Tafilalet region. By late afternoon, we reach the edge of the desert at Merzouga. This is where the real magic happens: you will meet your camel caravan for a sunset trek into the towering golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. Riding into the desert as the sun dips below the horizon is a spiritual experience. We arrive at our luxury desert camp, where you will be welcomed with traditional mint tea and a delicious Berber feast. The night ends with drumming around a campfire under a sky filled with millions of stars.
Today is dedicated to the Sahara. We’ll explore the dunes in a 4×4, visiting the village of Khamlia to hear the rhythmic Gnaoua music performed by the descendants of former slaves from sub-Saharan Africa. You will sit with the musicians, learn about their history, and even try playing some of the instruments. It is a soulful and moving experience that connects you to the deep roots of the desert.
Next, we drive into the “black desert” to meet a nomad family living in traditional wool tents. This is a humbling experience that allows you to see how people have survived in this extreme environment for generations. We will share a cup of tea and learn about their daily routines. We also visit the abandoned mines of M’ifis, where lead and zinc were once extracted. In the afternoon, you have free time to enjoy the dunes—try sandboarding or simply relax at the camp. As night falls, we enjoy another delicious dinner and perhaps another night of stargazing. The Sahara is one of the few places on earth with zero light pollution, making it a paradise for dreamers.
After a final desert sunrise, we bid farewell to the dunes and begin our long but scenic journey north toward Fes. We drive through the spectacular Ziz Valley, home to one of the largest palm groves in the world. The road then climbs back into the Middle Atlas Mountains, passing through Midelt, known as the apple capital. The scenery changes dramatically from the arid desert to the green, cool air of the mountains.
The highlight of the afternoon is the Cedar Forest of Azrou, where we will encounter the friendly Barbary Macaques. We will also stop in Ifrane, often called “Little Switzerland” for its alpine architecture and tidy parks. As the sun begins to set, we arrive in Fes, the spiritual and intellectual heart of Morocco. Your Riad in the medina will be your home for the next two nights. Fes is home to the world’s oldest university and a medina that has remained largely unchanged for over 1,000 years. After a long day of travel, you will enjoy a traditional Fassi dinner, preparing you for the deep dive into the medieval streets tomorrow.
Prepare to step back in time as we explore Fes El-Bali, the largest car-free urban area in the world. With over 9,000 narrow alleys, a local guide is essential to navigate this living museum. Our journey starts at the Royal Palace Gate with its seven golden doors, followed by a panoramic view of the medina from the Southern Tower. We enter the medina through the famous blue gate, Bab Boujloud. Inside, your senses will be overwhelmed by the scent of spices and the vibrant colors of silk.
We visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 859 AD, and the Bou Inania Madrasa, an architectural masterpiece. The highlight for many is the visit to the Chouara Tannery, the oldest in the world. From a nearby terrace, you can watch workers treating hides in stone vats filled with natural dyes. Fes is the best place in Morocco to buy high-quality leather goods, carpets, and ceramics directly from the artisans who make them. After a day of intense exploration, you will return to your Riad for a quiet evening, reflecting on the incredible layers of history you have witnessed.
We leave Fes today and travel toward the Roman era at Volubilis. This UNESCO World Heritage site contains the best-preserved Roman ruins in Morocco. As you walk along the Decumanus Maximus, you will see remarkably intact mosaics depicting scenes from Greek mythology. The triumphal arches and the Basilica standing against the Moroccan sky provide a powerful sense of the scale of history in this region.
Next, we head north into the Rif Mountains toward the “Blue Pearl,” Chefchaouen. As you arrive in the late afternoon, the sight of the city’s blue-washed buildings clinging to the mountainside is truly magical. Every corner of Chefchaouen’s medina is a photographer’s dream. We’ll wander through the Place Outa el-Hammam and see the Ras El Ma spring, where local women still gather to wash clothes in the cold mountain water. For a stunning view, hike up to the Spanish Mosque at sunset. The sight of the entire blue city glowing under the fading light is a memory you will cherish forever.
On your final day, depending on your flight schedule, you may have some free time for a last breakfast on your Riad’s terrace. This is a time for reflection on the incredible journey you have completed—from the Red City and the Atlantic coast to the medieval streets of Fes and the golden dunes of the Sahara. You have traveled through centuries of history and experienced the legendary hospitality of the Moroccan people.
Our team will provide a private transfer from Chefchaouen to Tangier or back to Casablanca Airport for your return flight. As you check in and prepare to board, you will likely find yourself scrolling through your photos, recalling the scent of the spices in the souks and the sound of the desert drums. You leave Morocco not just with souvenirs, but with stories and memories that will last a lifetime. Safe travels, or as we say in Morocco, Trik Salama! We hope to welcome you back to our beautiful kingdom very soon.
